Periods are integrals of algebraic differential forms over topological cycles of an algebraic variety.
They admit several incarnations: they can be numbers (if the variety is defined over a number field) or analytic functions (when considering a family of such varieties). They exist in both complex and p-adic contexts.

The modern point of view on periods, which unifies these different perspectives, is to interpret them as the coefficients of a matrix comparing two distinct cohomology theories applied to the same algebraic variety (or family of algebraic varieties).

From this viewpoint, the properties of periods—especially their transcendence properties—are conjecturally governed by algebraic cycles, through Grothendieck’s period conjecture and its variants. Conversely, both numerical and functional periods are valuable tools for constructing algebraic cycles, via the complex and p-adic Hodge theories.

The goal of this conference is to bring together international specialists in these areas (cohomology, cycles, periods), to foster interactions between the different communities interested in them, and in particular to promote dialogue between the complex and p-adic, or numerical and functional, aspects of the subject. Most of the non-speaking participants will come from European universities, with at least half being PhD students or postdoctoral researchers.
