Bridging Optimism and FTRL: A Unified Framework for Sequential Learning

This research aims to kick-start an ambitious international collaboration project between two early-career researchers in complementary areas of learning theory. Our research project aims to develop a unified theoretical framework to connect two influential paradigms in sequential learning theory: optimism in the face of uncertainty and Follow-the-Regularised-Leader. Although both embody similar principles of exploration and foresight, they have evolved in separate communities, leaving their deeper conceptual links largely unexplored despite great potential for cross-pollination.
Our preliminary work has identified key target results and sketched the outline of the framework we seek. CIRM’s intensive work environment is the ideal context to focus on and realise this vision, and turn this project idea into a top-tier publication.
Beyond the research goals, this stay will provide a catalyst for both of us to prepare
long-term international collaborations (together and with third parties) by consolidating
expertise, exchanging tools, and identifying follow-up directions and future collaborators.
Ce séjour de recherche vise à lancer un ambitieux projet de collaboration internationale entre deux jeunes chercheurs travaillant dans des domaines complémentaires de la théorie de l’apprentissage. Notre projet de recherche a pour objectif de développer un cadre théorique unifié reliant deux paradigmes influents de l’apprentissage séquentiel : l’optimisme face à l’incertitude et la méthode Follow-the-Regularised-Leader. Bien qu’ils reposent sur des principes similaires d’exploration et d’anticipation, ces deux cadres ont évolué dans des communautés distinctes, laissant leurs liens conceptuels profonds encore largement inexplorés malgré leur fort potentiel de fertilisation croisée.
Nos travaux préliminaires ont permis d’identifier des résultats cibles clés et de tracer les
grandes lignes du cadre que nous souhaitons établir. L’environnement de travail intensif du CIRM constitue le contexte idéal pour se concentrer sur cette vision, la concrétiser et transformer cette idée de projet en une publication de premier plan.
Au-delà des objectifs scientifiques, ce séjour constituera également un catalyseur pour préparer des collaborations internationales à long terme (ensemble et avec des tiers), en consolidant nos expertises, en échangeant nos outils et en identifiant de nouvelles directions de recherche ainsi que de futurs collaborateurs.
