The workshop is part of the PatriMaths project, funded by the ANR (Jan. 2022-Dec. 2025). This project aims to fill a gap in the history of mathematics by studying the processes of patrimonialization of mathematics from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, on the one hand in dictionaries and encyclopedias, and on the other hand in mathematical or general libraries.
The objective of this workshop is to study the patrimonialization of mathematics according to three complementary issues, in which quantitative analyses and case-based approaches are combined: 1° patrimonial dynamics and communities; 2° patrimonialization by selection and accumulation: supports, places and actors; 3° patrimonial legitimization and memory of mathematics. It will thus reinforce the understanding of the processes and modalities of the preservation and dissemination of mathematics in the long term, while proposing a methodological reflection on the articulation of the quantitative and qualitative points of view in the history of mathematics.
The workshop will combine plenary lectures, shorter talks and collaborative workshops. To this end, it will bring together historians of mathematics involved in the PatriMaths project, French and foreign scholars who have worked on similar issues or according to similar methodologies, and archivists and librarians with expertise in conservation and preservation.
Le workshop s’inscrit dans le projet PatriMaths, financé par l’ANR (janv. 2022-dec. 2025). Ce projet vise à combler une lacune de l’histoire des mathématiques en étudiant les processus de patrimonialisation dont les mathématiques ont fait l’objet, du XVIIIe au XXe siècle, d’une part dans les dictionnaires et encyclopédies, d’autre part dans les bibliothèques de mathématiques ou généralistes.
L’objectif de ce workshop est d’aborder la patrimonialisation des mathématiques suivant trois problématiques complémentaires, dans lesquelles se conjuguent analyses quantitatives et approches par cas : 1° dynamiques patrimoniales et communautés ; 2° patrimonialisation par sélection et accumulation: supports, lieux et acteurs ; 3° légitimation patrimoniale et mémoire des mathématiques. Il permettra ainsi de mieux comprendre les processus et les modalités de la préservation et de la diffusion des mathématiques dans la longue durée, tout en proposant une réflexion méthodologique sur l’articulation des points de vue quantitatif et qualitatif en histoire des mathématiques.
Le workshop conjuguera des conférences plénières, des communications plus courtes et des ateliers de travail collaboratifs. Pour cela, il réunira les historiens des mathématiques participant au projet PatriMaths, des collègues enseignant(e)s chercheur(se)s français(es) et étranger(ère)s ayant travaillé sur des problématiques proches ou selon des méthodologies similaires, et des archivistes et bibliothécaires ayant une expertise en matière de conservation et de préservation.
