The workshop will provide an essential interdisciplinary opportunity to take stock of the significant recent advances regarding the methods of composition and organization of two major sections of the Encyclopédie (1751–1772) edited by Diderot and D’Alembert: the arts and crafts, under Diderot’s supervision, and the mathematical sciences, led by D’Alembert. The aim will be to review the results obtained to date and to identify short- and medium-term research prospects for the critical and annotated edition of D’Alembert’s Complete Works and the Collaborative and Critical Digital Edition of the Encyclopédie (ENCCRE). The meeting will be organized around three main themes:

1) a study of the manufacture (authors, mapping of articles and plates, attribution of anonymous articles, identification of textual and iconographic sources) within the two fields of knowledge;

2) a study of the vocabulary of the two fields, including an analysis of the extent of tradition versus innovation in mathematical, scientific, and technical language, and its reception;

3) the critical edition of D’Alembert’s “Discours préliminaire” for the Encyclopédie, as well as a corpus of articles and plates on mathematics and the arts and crafts.

It will closely integrate classical research methods with the latest digital analysis methods derived from artificial intelligence. To this end, the conference brings together historians of mathematics, science, and technology, literary scholars specializing in D’Alembert, Diderot, and the Encyclopédie, and scholars in the digital humanities.

1) l’étude de la manufacture (auteurs, cartographie des articles et des planches, attribution d’articles anonymes, identification des sources textuelles et iconographiques) des deux champs de connaissance ;

2) l’étude du vocabulaire des deux domaines, analyse de la part d’héritage, de renouvellement de la langue mathématique, scientifique et technique, et de sa réception ;
