This project focuses on the study of even contact structures on even-dimensional manifolds, with particular emphasis on their relations with foliations, their deformation theory, and rigidity phenomena arising from supporting open book decompositions.
The main objectives of the research stay are threefold. First, we aim to systematically investigate the relationship between even contact structures and codimension-one foliations, by constructing explicit deformations from foliations to even contact structures and conversely, using open book decompositions as a guiding framework. Second, the project seeks to analyze and compare different notions of open books supporting even contact structures, contrasting the existing approach based on contact pages with a new notion inspired by classical contact geometry, relying on transversality to a Reeb-type vector field. Third, we plan to identify and study rigidity phenomena induced by geometric constraints on the pages of open books, such as tightness of contact pages, and to understand their implications for the dynamics of the characteristic line field.
The novelty of the project lies in the use of open book decompositions as a unifying framework to address existence, deformation, and rigidity questions for even contact structures, a topic that remains far less developed than its odd-dimensional counterpart. The project also introduces new constructions linking foliations, even contact structures, and Engel structures, particularly in dimension four.
The expected impact is both international and local. At the international level, the project contributes to the development of an emerging area at the intersection of contact geometry, foliation theory, and dynamical systems, and is expected to lead to joint publications and longterm collaborations. At the local level, it strengthens the participation of African researchers in high-level mathematical research, supports advanced training of young mathematicians, and fosters sustained scientific exchanges between Africa and Europe.
