Linear dynamics, the theory of the dynamical properties of linear operators, was originally motivated by the Invariant Subspace Problem in the 1980s. The theory has since turned into a well established and very active research topic. Around 2010, the main body of the theory had attained a state of maturity that led to the publication of two independent monographs: Dynamics of linear operators (Cambridge University Press 2009) by F. Bayart and E. Matheron, and Linear chaos (Springer-Verlag 2011) by K.-G. Grosse Erdmann and A. Peris Manguillot. The second book, written by two of the present proposers, benefitted greatly from the three visits of the authors at CIRM in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
During the last 15 years, several new directions in linear dynamics have evolved. Let us mention the notion of recurrence that goes back to Poincaré, and the notion of ergodicity that is linked to Birkhoff’s ergodic theorem. In addition, some interesting new classes of operators have been studied, and the theory has found some new applications. It is the aim of the three proposers to write a new book, entitled Topics in linear dynamics, that is intended to cover these new aspects.
The time up to the intended Research in Residence will be used for the writing of several chapters of the book. The meeting at CIRM will allow the authors (from three different countries) to assess and harmonise their writing, to coordinate efforts, and to plan future chapters. We learnt from our past experience that CIRM is an ideal place for this purpose.
La dynamique linéaire, la théorie des propriétés dynamiques des opérateurs linéaires, a été initialement motivée dans les années 1980 par le problème du sous-espace invariant. Depuis, elle est devenue un sujet de recherche bien établi et très actif. Vers 2010, l’essentiel de la théorie avait atteint un stade de maturité qui a conduit à la publication de deux monographies indépendantes : Dynamics of linear operators (Cambridge University Press 2009) par F. Bayart et E. Matheron, et Linear chaos (Springer-Verlag 2011) par K.-G. Grosse-Erdmann et A. Peris Manguillot. Le second ouvrage, écrit par deux des promoteurs actuels, a grandement bénéficie de trois séjours des auteurs au CIRM en 2008, 2009 et 2010.
Au cours des 15 dernières années, plusieurs nouvelles directions ont évolué en dynamique linéaire. Mentionnons la notion de récurrence, qui remonte à Poincaré, et la notion d’ergodicité, liée au théorème ergodique de Birkhoff. De plus, de nouvelles classes d’opérateurs intéressantes ont été ´étudiées, et la théorie a trouvé de nouvelles applications. Les trois auteurs ont pour objectif d’écrire un nouvel ouvrage, intitulé Topics in linear dynamics, qui couvrira ces nouveaux aspects.
Le temps jusqu’aux ≪ recherches en résidence ≫ sera consacré à la rédaction de plusieurs chapitres de l’ouvrage. La réunion au CIRM permettra aux auteurs (de trois pays différents) d’évaluer et d’harmoniser leurs travaux, de coordonner leurs efforts et de planifier les chapitres suivants. Notre expérience du passé nous a convaincu que le CIRM est un lieu idéal pour un tel objectif.
