In the last decades, dynamics of research have developed among mathematicians, as well as among historians and philosophers of mathematics, which, in our view, are convergent.
Indeed, we observe that at the present day, quite a few mathematicians have developed a strong interest in the history of mathematics and in philosophical issues, and that this interest of theirs is related to their own mathematical work. Moreover, historians of mathematics have recently devoted much attention to how mathematicians of the past have delved into the history of mathematics as well as into philosophical reflections and how this research has been intimately related to progress they have made in mathematics. Furthermore, an increasing number of historians and philosophers of mathematics are aware of the importance for them to maintain a link with mathematics in the making—not only with respect to the knowledge that is developed, but also for the new practices that are emerging. In addition, historians of mathematics have traditionally valued what philosophy of mathematics could bring to their work, and the converse has also been true with philosophers of mathematics who rooted their work in historical material and studies. With the turn of both the history and the philosophy of mathematics towards a study of mathematical practices, the issue of the possibly fruitful relationship between the history and the philosophy of mathematics has been renewed, without any proper discussion being devoted to it.
Our aim for organizing this conference is to bring together historians and philosophers of mathematics as well as (philosophically and historically interested) mathematicians, to make these dynamics visible to all the actors involved and encourage convergence between them. Our aim is to foster the development of these dynamics and to inspire the establishment of fruitful collaborations between scholars in these fields.
Dans les dernières décennies, des dynamiques de recherches qui nous paraissent convergentes se sont développées parmi les mathématiciennes et les mathématiciennes, ainsi que parmi les historiennes et historiens des mathématiques et les philosophes des mathématiques.
Nous observons en effet que bon nombre de mathématiciennes et mathématiciens accordent un grand intérêt à des questions d’histoire et de philosophie des mathématiques, et que cet intérêt est directement lié à leurs travaux mathématiques proprement dits.
Parallèlement, de nombreux travaux en histoire des mathématiques portant sur les mathématiciens du passé qui ont cherché leur inspiration dans l’histoire des mathématiques et dans des réflexions philosophiques ont récemment montré que cette recherche historique et philosophique était intimement liée aux progrès qu’ils avaient apporté aux mathématiques elles-mêmes. Enfin, un nombre croissant d’historiennes, d’historiens et de philosophes des mathématiques ont une conscience aiguë de l’importance de maintenir un lien avec les mathématiques telles qu’elles se font – non seulement en terme de production de savoir, mais aussi en ce qui concerne l’émergence de nouvelles pratiques. La pratique de l’histoire des mathématiques a traditionnellement reconnu la valeur des apports de la philosophie des mathématiques aux travaux historiques, et la réciproque est vraie des philosophes des mathématiques qui ont inscrit leurs réflexions dans le matériau et les études historiques. Puisqu’aussi bien l’histoire que la philosophie des mathématiques ont tourné leur intérêt vers les pratiques mathématiques, la question d’une possible relation mutuellement productive entre l’histoire des mathématiques, la philosophie des mathématiques et les mathématiques elles-mêmes acquiert un intérêt renouvelé. Nous pensons que cette question requiert une discussion spécifique, qui lui soit consacrée.
Notre objectif dans cette conférence est de rassembler des historiennes et des historiens, des philosophes et des mathématiciennes et des mathématiciens intéressés par l’histoire et la philosophie afin de rendre visible pour tous les participants les convergences qui les rassemblent et d’encourager les dynamiques communes. Notre objectif est de créer un environnement favorable à la croissance de ces dynamiques et d’inspirer une collaboration productive entre chercheuses et chercheurs de ces trois domaines.
