RESEARCH SCHOOL

An introduction to dynamics on surfaces and random walks

22 – 26 July, 2024

This research school in Geometry and Dynamics on surfaces, revolves around two classic and very current themes which are : – the topological and ergodic dynamics of geodesic and horocylic flows ; – random walks on groups. Indeed, starting from the work of Eskin-Mirzakhani on orbit closures of the upper triangular subgroup of SL(2,R) on strata of Abelian differentials ten years ago, recent years have witnessed some interplay between the dynamical theory of surfaces and the one of random walks on groups. One of the objectives of the research school is to give young researchers the opportunity to learn about both topics, in view for them to be able to deal with emerging questions.

WORKSHOP

Geometry, dynamics and randomness

29 July – 2nd August, 2024

Topics of this workshop will cover the ones of the research school « An introduction to dynamics on surfaces and random walks » of the previous week, that are, dynamics on surfaces and random walks on groups. We will also discuss other mathematical subjects whose study is well-developed in Africa, such as Riemannian and sub-Riemannian geometry, Lie groups and tropical geometry. Talks will include a few mini-projects, which are presentations of their subjects by PhD students.

RESEARCH IN RESIDENCE

Geometric Contributions on 4D Human body analysis

Human body analysis is a very active research field with various applications; for instance, in computer vision, virtual reality, medical imaging, … . However, it remains a very challenging task mainly, because of the significant variations of human shapes across different subjects and body postures. In this project, we are interested in the representation, comparison, deformation and classification of 3D human shapes that account the geometric shapes and postures variations across various human subjects. Our proposed approach builds on very recent works but considers different nonlinear differentiable manifolds such that robust metrics invariant under rigid motions and reparametrizations are introduced; this will be explored during this research in residence.
