There are many links between mathematics and other domains, be they scientific (up to Claude Levi-Strauss and André Weil’s works on anthropology), artistic (Eugène Guillevic, Georges Perec, in litterature, Maurits Cornelis Escher in pictural arts, to give a few examples) or curiosities of everyday life (games, tiling, borromean knots, etc.). The idea that mathematics, more or less hidden, are everywhere is very common by now. As for music for instance, it is well known that ‘western’ scales use the proximity between 3^12 and 2^19 in order to build the fifths cycle, following Pythagoras and the Harmony of spheres.
For this project, we want to go beyond the ‘application’ of mathematics, the juxtaposition of scientific and poetic views or the simple pretext. We want to go deeper and work on creating a poetic, musical and song-based show around mathematics. In fact, rather than ‘around’ mathematics, we should say ‘at its heart’, as we intend to explore the music and poetry that are born of the essence of mathematics: concepts, ideas, signs, words, etc. Allain Leprest, poet, author and singer, said: « I observe mathematics from afar with the conviction that it contains more poetry than we can imagine (…) It is full of dreams. It’s a different way of looking at the sky than the poets do, no doubt, but they probably go together. » It is at this junction that we want to go, « the crossroads of delirium and structure » we might say, paraphrasing composer Gérard Grisey (Écrits, Éd. MF, 2008) when he spoke of music, « number and drama » for Pythagoras.
The aim is to create an artistic work that can appeal to a broad, non-specialist audience, while at the same time being demanding in terms of its scientific content and going deep into the mathematical subject matter. To achieve this, Lucie Taffin, singer, musician and instrumentalist, will enter mathematics in the same way as Alain Plagne, mathematician, will enter music. Alain Plagne’s experience in the artistic field (writing, songwriting, music, theatre, cf. cv) and Lucie Taffin’s experience in a wide repertoire of songs, philosophy, improvisation and cross-disciplinary performances will be invaluable as we embark on this adventurous project, which, like all research.
Les liens entre les mathématiques et d’autres domaines scientifiques (jusqu’aux sciences humaines de Claude Levi-Strauss et André Weil), artistiques (Eugène Guillevic ou Georges Perec en littérature, Maurits Cornelis Escher en art pictural pour ne prendre que quelques exemples) ou quotidiens (jeux, pavages, nœuds borroméens, etc…) sont légion. L’idée que les mathématiques seraient partout, plus ou moins cachées, est de plus en plus banale. En musique, par exemple, il est bien connu que les gammes ‘occidentales’ abusent de la proximité de 3^12 et de 2^19 pour construire le cycle des quintes en suivant Pythagore et l’Harmonie des sphères.
Pour ce projet, nous voulons aller au-delà de l’application des mathématiques, de la juxtaposition des regards scientifiques et poétiques ou du simple prétexte. Nous souhaitons aller en profondeur et travailler à la création d’un spectacle poétique, musical et chansonnier autour des mathématiques. D’ailleurs, plutôt qu’autour, devrions-nous dire au coeur puisque nous comptons partir en exploration intime de la musique et de la poésie qui naissent de l’essence des mathématiques : les concepts, les idées, les signes, les mots, etc… Allain Leprest, poète, auteur et chanteur, disait : « J’observe de loin les mathématiques avec la conviction qu’elles renferment en elles plus de poésie qu’on peut l’imaginer (…) Elles sont remplies de rêves. C’est une façon de regarder le ciel d’une autre manière que les poètes ne le font, sans aucun doute, mais elles se rejoignent probablement. » C’est à ce point de jonction que nous voulons nous rendre, « carrefour du délire et de la structure » pourrions-nous dire en paraphrasant le compositeur Gérard Grisey (Écrits, Éd. MF, 2008) lorsqu’il parlait de la musique, « nombre et drame » pour Pythagore.
Il s’agit de travailler à créer une œuvre artistique qui puisse s’adresser à un public large et non spécialiste et qui soit pour autant exigeante sur le fond scientifique, qui aille en profondeur dans la matière mathématique. Pour cela, Lucie Taffin, chanteuse, musicienne, instrumentiste, entrera en mathématiques comme Alain Plagne, mathématicien, entrera en musique. Nos expériences, pour Alain Plagne dans le domaine artistique (écriture, chanson, musique, théâtre, cf. cv) et pour Lucie Taffin dans le domaine de la chanson à vaste répertoire, la philosophie, les improvisations et des spectacles croisés (cf. cv) nous seront précieuses pour aborder ce travail aventureux, comme toute recherche.
