The research school is an introductory meeting to the thematic program “Representation Theory and Noncommutative Geometry” to be held at IHP from January to March 2025. The trimester is part of an ongoing effort to bridge two fiels of Mathematics : the representation theory of locally compact groups and the theory of operator algebras. These research domains share origins in harmonic analysis, spectral theory and quantum mechanics but grew in separate directions. Recent progress in representation theory, involving especially non-Riemannian symmetric spaces and spherical varieties, and new tools developed in operator algebras, especially those involving K-theory and the other methods of non-commutative geometry, offer exciting prospects for new work at the interface between the two fields.
L’école de recherches constitue une rencontre introductive au trimestre thématique « Théorie des représentations et géométrie non commutative » qui se tiendra à l’IHP de janvier à mars 2025. Le trimestre s’inscrit dans un effort continu visant à rapprocher deux domaines des mathématiques : la théorie des représentations des groupes localement compacts et la théorie des algèbres d’opérateurs. Ces domaines de recherche ont des origines communes dans l’analyse harmonique, la théorie spectrale et la mécanique quantique, mais ont évolué dans des directions distinctes. Les progrès récents en théorie des représentations, impliquant notamment les espaces symétriques non riemanniens et les variétés sphériques, et les nouveaux outils développés en algèbre d’opérateurs, en particulier ceux impliquant la K-théorie et les autres méthodes de géométrie non commutative, offrent des perspectives passionnantes pour de nouveaux travaux à l’interface des deux domaines.
