Jean-Marie Souriau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Marie_Souriau), born on 3 June 1922 and dead on 15 March 2012, was a French mathematician, known for works in symplectic geometry, in which he was one of the pioneers. He has left us not solely a master piece of scientific work through his treatises on dynamical systems, relativity and quantum mechanics but has also given us a sound philosophical vision of the world.
Originally founded in 1956 by Jean-Marie Souriau, his doctoral students and friends, re-launched by Claude Vallée in 1996, the workshop entitled “Colloque International de Théories Variationnelles” (CITV) provides today an informal setting to present and discuss the state-of-the-art and the most recent findings concerning Mathematics, Physics, Mechanics and their interactions.
Since about ten years, the talks are in English and the workshop evolves towards a wider international opening and gives more involvement to women and diversity. Every year during a week, the CITV brings together a small group of participants hoping to work within the founder’s spirit. In marked contrast to standard workshop, the CITV’s style is completely informal: schedule prepared day-to-day, preference given to present ideas on the blackboard, emphasis on scientific maturity and creative ideas as opposed to technicalities, large time to questions, discussion and exchange of ideas.
Jean-Marie Souriau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Marie_Souriau), né le 3juin 1922 et mort le 15 mars 2912, est un mathématicien français, connu pour ses travaux en géométrie symplectique dont il fut un des pionniers. Il nous a laissé non seulement une oeuvre scientifique à travers ses traités de dynamique des systèmes, de relativité et de mécanique quantique mais il nous a aussi légué une vision philosophique profonde du monde.
Fondé à l’origine en 1956 par Jean-Marie Souriau, ses étudiants en thèse et ses amis, relancé par Claude Vallée en 1996, le séminaire intitulé “Colloque International de Théories Variationnelles” (CITV) fourni aujourd’hui un cadre informel pour présenter et discuter l’Etat de l’Art et les plus récentes avancées concernant les Mathématiques, la Physique, la Mécanique et leurs interactions.
Depuis une dizaine d’années, les exposés sont en anglais et le séminaire évolue vers une ouverture plus large à l’international et donne plus d’implication aux femmes et à la diversité. Chaque année, le CITV réuni un petit groupe de participants souhaitant travailler dans l’esprit du fondateur. En opposition marquée aux séminaires standards, le style du CITV est complètement informel : programme préparé au jour le jour, préférence donnée à la présentation d’idées au tableau, accent mis sur la maturité scientifique et les idées créatives par opposition à la technicité, large place pour les questions, discussions et l’échange d’idées.
